2021 - First record of Albanian invertebrate' cave fauna

Dr Joanna Kocot Zalewska

During the first expedition altogether ca 100 invertebrates were collected (67 from caves and 30 from mine). The material was collected from several caves and one old mine of bauxites. We used pitfall traps and direct searching methods. The specimens belong to: beetles (Insecta: Coleoptera), flies (Insecta: Diptera), crickets (Insecta: Orthoptera), springtails (Entognatha: Collembola), spiders (Arachnida: Araneae), harvestmen (Arachnida: Opiliones), Ixodida (Arachnida), millipedes (Diplopoda). The results are very promising for the future expeditions. Many of collected species represent high specialised into underground living. Some of them might be endemic for Albania.
